The Rabari are camel-breeders by caste occupation and inhabit the desert area of the Kachchh district in Gujarat. Traditionally, Rabari men would make a variety of camel trappings and bags, as well as elaborate neck decorations adorned with tassels, buttons, and cowry shells, known as gorbandh, which were intended to beautify and protect the Rabaris’ camels.
Items may be visibly faded, distressed, typical of age, and consistent with most of the textiles in stock, which distinguishes them from the newer, mass-produced textiles made for the tourism and import markets. Most items show some discoloration, wear, missing patches of embroidery or mirrors, and faint stains in some cases.
