Description
Kalaga Burmese Bead-Embroidered Pillow/Cushion Cover from Thailand. Vintage from approximately the 1960s-1970s.
This Kalaga is for an 18×18 cushion and there is a 1-inch fringe around the perimeter.
The central figure of a person riding a horse is stuffed, which produces a 3-dimensional effect.
This lovely vintage textile is embellished with multicolor embroidery, sequins, glass beads, and it has a black fabric base.
The condition of the item is mostly good but there is a small section of the fringe that has become detached. Some of the glass beads have fallen out and care should be taken when moving the Kalaga to avoid more glass beads falling out. The back of the cushion cover has a few tiny holes.
Kalagas look very nice when displayed in a frame without glass so that the texture and intricate details can be fully appreciated. It could also be hung as an unframed tapestry.
Items may be visibly faded, distressed, typical of age, and consistent with most of the Indian wall hangings in stock, which distinguishes them from the newer, mass-produced textiles made for the tourism and import markets. Most items show some discoloration, wear, missing patches of embroidery or mirrors, and faint stains in some cases.
