Description
Vintage Dowry Bag from Gujarat, India, made with 100% cotton fabric. Note that neither the top nor the bottom of the bag is sewn shut, so it wouldn’t really function as a bag in its current condition.
It is expertly crafted with needlepoint work and still in fairly good condition for its age.
Bags like this were used as part of the dowry and to pack gifts during wedding ceremonies and other festivities. This piece is estimated to have been made circa 1970s-1980s.

Items may be visibly faded, distressed, typical of age, and consistent with most of the Indian wall hangings in stock, which distinguishes them from the newer, mass-produced textiles made for the tourism and import markets. Most items show some discoloration, wear, missing patches of embroidery or mirrors, and faint stains in some cases.
