This vintage turban cloth is still mostly wound up from the original tie-dyeing process. The fabric is a lovely lightweight cotton with a soft, airy feel. The fabrics titled ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ are fairly similar in color.
Leheriya is a traditional tie-dye technique from Rajasthan, India, known for its vibrant colors and distinctive wave-like patterns. The name comes from the Rajasthani word for “wave,” reflecting the flowing diagonal stripes created through this unique dyeing process. To make leheriya, lightweight cotton or silk fabric is tightly rolled on the diagonal, tied at intervals, and then dyed. The resulting ripple effect creates beautiful, mesmerizing patterns in striking color combinations. Traditionally, artisans used natural dyes and multiple dye baths, often finishing with indigo or alizarin.
Whether displayed in a decorative basket or bowl, or appreciated as a textile piece, it makes a beautiful addition to any collection.
Items may be visibly faded, distressed, typical of age, and consistent with most of the Indian wall hangings in stock, which distinguishes them from the newer, mass-produced textiles made for the tourism and import markets. Most items show some discoloration, wear, missing patches of embroidery or mirrors, and faint stains in some cases.
