For generations in Kutch, embroidery has been more than decoration—it’s been a source of protection and blessing during life’s challenges. Traditionally, mothers and grandmothers began stitching a girl’s dowry pieces from the moment she was born, with the girl herself adding to the collection as she grew. These hand-embroidered treasures carried deep meaning, but in many communities today, the practice has faded, replaced by mass-produced, store-bought items. Items may be visibly faded, distressed, typical of age, and consistent with most of the Indian wall hangings in stock, which distinguishes them from the newer, mass-produced textiles made for the tourism and import markets.
